A Perfect Day in Lawrence, Kansas
Whether you’re craving a day trip from Kansas City or a full-blown weekend escape, Lawrence, Kansas is it! It's a city that blends creative culture, quirky shops, great food, and classic college-town energy. I come here as often as I can - it’s truly such a gem. Here’s exactly how I’d break down a perfect day or weekend in Lawrence.
Where to Eat
Start your day here for coffee and a pastry at Barker. Cozy, local, and located right on Mass Street, it’s the perfect spot to ease into your morning before exploring downtown Lawrence. Whether you’re grabbing something quick or savoring your morning latte with a book in hand, it sets the tone for your day in Lawrence. I've never had a bad bite here, but I absolutely adore their chocolate chip cookies!
A local favorite for fresh seafood and a fun atmosphere. They have fresh seafood delivered daily - a major feat for the landlocked Lawrence! Their happy hour is one of my favorites in town, but it really is great any time you visit.
For something casual and classic, this is the move. Juicy burgers, great vegetarian options (try the Mumbai - it is my favorite!), fries, and shakes - this is pure Midwest comfort food. It's always my go-to when I’m in town to see a game but it is a good idea any time you're in Lawrence. Plus, their sauce line up is hard to beat!
This is my favorite stop for breakfast after a night in Lawrence, but honestly it’s worthy of a visit on its own. Classic comfort food in a cozy setting that always hits the spot, whether you’re brunching with friends or easing into a slow morning.
With an ever-changing menu, 715 should be high on your must-try list. Their dessert menu changes often but it is always exceptional. It’s a great choice for a more elevated dining experience that still feels approachable and perfect for a special night out in Lawrence.
Founded in 2009 by longtime Lawrence residents Aaron and Regan Pillar, Culinaria serves made-from-scratch, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine in one of East Lawrence’s most historic buildings. With thoughtfully curated wines, classic and craft cocktails, and patio dining when weather permits, it’s a favorite of both locals and visitors.
Shopping on Mass Street
Massachusetts Street (Mass St.) is the heart of Lawrence! Walkable, historic, colorful, and full of personality, this is where you’ll naturally spend most of your time. From coffee shops to bookstores, vintage stores to bars, Mass Street has it all!
This store is a must for vintage clothing lovers. Daisy Lee Vintage is a curated boutique specializing in vintage renewal and 60s, 70s, 90s, and Y2K fashion. From unique clothing to nostalgic accessories, whether you’re shopping seriously or just browsing, it’s always a fun stop on Mass.
This store is beautifully curated and full of things you didn’t know you needed! Wonder Fair has been a destination for print, pen, and paper lovers in downtown Lawrence since 2008. It’s my favorite store in town, complete with a shop cat named Dave and even a famously haunted bathroom.
This book store is an iconic independent bookstore with a great mix of new releases, local authors, and unexpected finds. The Raven is Lawrence’s beloved general-interest bookstore, offering wide selections across every genre, making it just as fun to browse as it is to shop for something on your TBR.
A cozy used bookstore with serious charm and excellent prices - there is truly something for everyone here! Located at 708 Massachusetts Street, Dusty Bookshelf is a must for book lovers who enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Be sure to say hi to Dinah the cat while you browse the shelves!
Squishington is the childhood nickname of owner Jhami, given by his sisters, and now it’s the name behind one of the sweetest spots in town. Located on the historic corner of 7th and Mass, this candy shop is designed to feel magical, whether you’re grabbing one treat or building a custom mix.
A note about Mass Street:
These are just a few of my favorites, but part of what makes Lawrence so special is how many great spots you’ll discover simply by walking up and down Mass. Every block has something worth popping into, so leave time to wander and see what you find.
Explore the University of Kansas Campus
Even if you’re not a KU fan, the campus is beautiful and well worth your time. With historic buildings, expansive green spaces, public art, and the legendary Allen Fieldhouse, it’s truly an idyllic college campus. Whether you’re catching a game or just wandering, it perfectly captures Lawrence’s college-town charm.
Make it a day trip or a weekend
Lawrence works perfectly as both a quick escape and a longer stay. You can hit the highlights in a day, but spending the night is always my preference when I have time.
If you're staying overnight, I recommend these lodging options:
There are also several great options on AirBNB like this, this, and this.
Why I Love Lawrence
Lawrence has a perfect mix of city living and small town relaxation that makes it endlessly appealing. You can fill a weekend hopping between great food, local shops, and campus sights, or slow down and simply enjoy being in Lawrence. It’s charming and exactly my kind of getaway.
